Eleanor Jean Mathews

Eleanor Jean (Cain) Mathews passed away May 2, 2022, at the Aegis Living Community in Carmichael, CA. She was born May 14, 1926, in Williams, CA to Eugene and Grace Gain. Eleanor grew up on the Cain ranch in the College City area where her dad raised dairy cattle and almonds.

After graduating from Pierce High School in Arbuckle, CA, Eleanor attended Sacramento City College for 2 years then transferring to San Jose State College. Eleanor graduated “Magna Cum Laude” in 1948 with a BA in physical education and a secondary teaching credential. She married her high school sweetheart, Doug Mathews and began teaching at Pierce High School in Arbuckle. Eleanor also served as a coach, taught biology, and worked in the office and library. She was inducted into the Colusa County Athletic Hall of Fame in 2019.

Eleanor’s community involvement included being a 4H leader, a member of the Colusa County Scholarship Screening Committee, member of the College City Cemetery Support Group, a volunteer for the Arbuckle Revitalization Committee, and was an observer in the Aircraft Warning Service during WWII.

Eleanor enjoyed playing golf, baseball, and bridge with friends. She also liked traveling, gardening, solving crossword puzzles and working on family genealogy. She loved spending many wonderful holiday celebrations with her family.

Eleanor is survived by her son Robert Mathews (Penny) of Arbuckle, daughters Linda Drawbert of Carmichael, and Cynthia Lowery (Wayne) of El Dorado Hills; 8 grandchildren, 8 great grandchildren and 3 great-great grandchildren; and her sister-in-law Lois Ramont (Dick) of Atascadero. She was preceded in death by her loving husband, Doug D. Mathews of 69 years and her son David Mathews.

Graveside services will take place at 11:00am, Friday, May 13, 2022, at College City Cemetery, 689 College City Road, College City, CA. A Celebration of Life will follow at the Arbuckle Golf Club, 5918 Hillgate Road, Arbuckle, CA.
