Colusa soccer holds off Pierce

Colusa’s Marco Marquez advances the ball as the Pierce defenders close in. Marquez had a goal in the RedHawks’ 4-2 win on Jan. 11.

Sacramento Valley League play kicked off last week as the Colusa RedHawks’ girls and boys soccer teams claimed victories over the rival Pierce Bears, in a doubleheader on Jan. 11.

In the early game, the RedHawk girls (5-6, 1-1) emerged with the 3-1 win, behind goals from Sofia Benitez, Josslyn Santana, and Mia Valenica, while Adelyn Flores found the back of the net for the Bears, who despite remaining winless on the season, played much better than their record would indicate.

Colusa’s boys team took the late game 4-2, answering an early goal by Pierce, with three in the first half to gain control of the match.

Charlie Santana recorded the brace to lead the RedHawks (4-6, 1-1), while David Garcia and Marco Marquez netted one goal apiece.

Colusa’s Gisselle Vidal defends against Pierce’s Adelyn Flores in the RedHawks’ 3-1 win on Jan. 11.

Goalkeeper Julius Cervantes made eight saves, and Coach Armando Garcia commended his defense for their teamwork, which helped preserve the win.

Statistics for the Bears (2-3, 0-3) were not made available.

All four teams dropped their second matches last Thursday, but returned to action this week with Colusa traveling to Winters on Tuesday and hosting Willows today, while the Pierce boys faced Los Molinos at home on Jan. 18 before both squads head to Live Oak on Jan. 20.
