Portuguese Festa to be held Sunday

Celebrating a miracle that took place more than 700 years ago, the Princeton Holy Ghost and St. Anthony Portuguese Festa and Parade will be held Sunday, June 25.

The celebration is open to all people to discover the culture and heritage of the Portuguese people, whose families settled in Colusa and neighboring counties in the late 19th and early 20th century.

The activities will begin with festa royalty lining up in the Portuguese Hall at 9 AM. A parade begins promptly at 9:30 AM from the Portuguese Hall to St Joseph’s Catholic Church for 10 AM Mass and crowning of the queens.

This year’s Big Queen is Rylie Thuemler, the daughter of Jared Thuemler and Jessica Sullivan, of Willows. Her sidemaids are Kate Amaro and Amanda Pozzi.

Little Queen is Aria Roeth, the daughter of Mike and Laura Roeth. Her sidemaids are Natalie Kamienski and Luciana Robledo.

The traditional meal of roast beef, sopas, and potato salad will be served from noon to 2:30 PM. Take-out will be available after 2 PM with bring-your-own containers. The first auction will begin at 1:30 PM.

Music and dancing in the Hall will begin at lunchtime and continue throughout the afternoon and evening.

Dinner will begin around 6:30 PM until all are served. Take-out available after 7 PM.
The second auction will begin at 7 PM.

In keeping with the tradition of Queen Isabella of Portugal (canonized Saint Elizabeth, 1625) to feed the poor, there is no charge to attend the festa, although donations are appreciated. ■
