COLUSA, CA (MPG) – The Colusa County Chamber of Commerce is asking residents to take a more active role in organizing local events and programs, saying many community activities depend on a relatively small group of volunteers.
Chamber Executive Director Jack Cunningham issued the call pointing to the work that takes place behind the scenes at festivals, celebrations and other community events throughout Colusa County.
“[Volunteers] attend meetings. [Volunteers] make phone calls, and recruit vendors. [Volunteers] find sponsors. [Volunteers] move tables, hang signs, and they help clean up,” Cunningham said.
Much of that work falls to a limited group of volunteers from organizations including the Chamber, Lions Club, Rotary, Arts Council and Garden Club, along with residents who assist with city and community events.
Cunningham said those organizations often face the same problem: Communities want more events and activities; but the number of people willing to help organize them remains limited.
“There are always more things people would like to see happen than there are people willing to help make them happen,” Cunningham said.
He also addressed criticism that sometimes follows community events, particularly on social media. Rather than discouraging suggestions, Cunningham said the Chamber wants residents with ideas to help put them into action.
“If you think an event needs better entertainment, come help find it,” Cunningham said. “If you think we need different activities, bring us the idea and help organize it.”
Residents can help in several ways, including serving on committees, assisting with individual projects, recruiting other volunteers or connecting community organizations with people and resources.
Cunningham encouraged residents to find an organization or cause they care about and ask, “What can I do to help?”
One opportunity to make those connections will come during a Volunteer Fair planned in conjunction with Puptober Fest from 10 a.m. to noon Oct. 24 at Veterans Memorial Park in Colusa.
The fair will give residents an opportunity to meet representatives from local organizations and learn where volunteers are needed.
Cunningham said increased participation could help organizations expand existing events, develop new activities and strengthen community programs.
“This isn’t just an invitation, it is also a challenge,” Cunningham said.
He encouraged residents who have ideas for improving Colusa County events or activities to take part in the work required to make those ideas happen.
“If you have been saying, ‘Someone should …’ – Become that someone,” Cunningham said.
