COLUSA, CA (MPG) – VFW Post 2441 is seeking entries from Colusa County students and educators for three annual programs that recognize student writing, civic education and teaching.
The post is accepting entries for the Patriot’s Pen essay contest, Voice of Democracy audio-essay competition and VFW Teacher of the Year program. The deadline for all three is Oct. 31.
This year, students entering Patriot’s Pen and Voice of Democracy will respond to the theme, “What a Veteran Taught Me About America.”
Patriot’s Pen is open to students in grades six through eight. Entrants must submit a 300- to 400-word essay addressing the annual theme.
Entries begin at the local VFW post before advancing to district, department and national competition. The national first-place winner receives $5,000.
Last year, VFW Post 2441 awarded its $500 local Patriot’s Pen scholarship to Allie Dennis of Maxwell. Her essay addressed patriotism and the importance of remembering and honoring those who have served in the military.
High school students in grades nine through 12 can enter the Voice of Democracy competition, which the VFW established in 1947. Students must prepare a three- to five-minute recorded audio essay and submit a typed copy.
Voice of Democracy entries also advance from the local post through district, department and national levels. The national first-place winner receives a $35,000 scholarship, with additional scholarships awarded to other national winners.
Colusa High School senior Caden Agnew received Post 2441’s $500 local Voice of Democracy scholarship last year. His essay examined patriotism, including love and devotion to the country and Americans’ responsibility to support and preserve the nation.
The post also seeks nominations for its VFW Teacher of the Year program, which recognizes certified or licensed K-12 teachers who teach American history, traditions and citizenship.
Teachers may nominate themselves. Fellow teachers, supervisors, family members and others may also submit nominations.
Nominations must include the VFW Teacher of the Year nomination form. The post recommends including a letter describing the nominee’s teaching methods, educational resources and work with students.
Nominees should also submit one to five pages documenting their teaching experience. Supporting materials may include references, nomination letters, news articles and other documentation. A head-and-shoulders photograph should also accompany the nomination.
The local post selects its nominee for advancement to district competition. District winners can advance to the department level.
VFW Post 2441 named Chloe Ferraiuolo its local Teacher of the Year last year. The post recognized Ferraiuolo with Dennis and Agnew during its annual awards presentation.
