Local wrestlers turn in strong showing

In Loomis last Saturday for the Del Oro High School JV Championships and Lady Eagle Invitational, wrestlers from Williams and Pierce competed alongside nearly 800 others and performed admirably.

With multiple divisions in each weight category, six of the nine local participants garnered placings in the top four.

Pierce’s Lina Perez went 3-0 to claim first place in women’s 106-pound weight class, while Williams’ Kamila Medina took second at 137 pounds after going 3-1.

Two others capturing second place were Pierce’s Quin Stephens, who went 3-1 in the 188-pound division, along with the Yellowjackets’ Gustavo Garica, who at 222 pounds was 2-1.
Rounding out the performances was the Bears’ Kirk Shahan in third place at 160 pounds and Williams’s Jonathan Benitez, who wound up fourth after going 3-2 in the 172 pound class.

Up next for the grapplers are the North Valley JV Championships to be held on Jan. 28 in Orland, followed by the Sacramento Valley League Tournament on Feb. 4.■
