hen the Northern Section released its All-League softball players last month, eight Colusa County athletes received recognition for their contributions to their respective teams during the 2022 season. While not all teams kept statistics, what follows is a brief look at those who garnered acknowledgment.
Colusa: With an 8-6 record in the Sacramento Valley League, the RedHawks finished fourth, but were able to advance to the semifinal round of the NSCIF Division IV playoffs, before falling to Wheatland and concluding the season 14-16 overall.
Leading Colusa was its three All-SVL selections seniors Abby Myers and Anahi Guzman, along with junior Avery Lay.
Playing second base, Myers hit .391, with three home runs and 22 RBI, while Guzman, on the left side either at shortstop or third, finished with a .317 average, two home runs, and 13 RBI.
Lay came into her own this season, going 124 innings in the circle, where she posted an 11-9 record with a 1.75 ERA and 72 strikeouts, in addition to contributing at the plate with a .433 batting average.
Maxwell: Ending the season 21-7 overall with a loss to Fall River in the second round of the NSCIF Division VI/VII playoffs, the Panthers’ 7-3 record in the Five Star League play was good for third place and two All-League spots.
Senior Paige Vierra capped her career for the blue and gold by earning All-League honors, after the catcher hit .444 and drove in 23 runs.
Maxwell’s second All-FSL pick, freshman Kimmi Garrison, was a welcome addition for the Panthers, leading the team in hitting with a .538 average and 35 RBI, while also making 13 appearances in the circle, where she maintained a 1.38 ERA and struck out 64.
Pierce: With a new coach and a young team featuring nine underclassmen, it was at times rough going for the Bears, who finished seventh in a tough SVL with a record of 1-13 and 6-19 overall.
Senior third baseman Juliana Orozco represented Pierce on the All-SVL team, although statistics were not available.
Williams: The ‘Jackets (2-14, 1-13) scored their first Mid-Valley League win since 2011 this season and finished in a tie for fourth place in the standings
Seniors Evelyn Garcia and Xochitl Hernandez were credited for their efforts, although individual statistics were unavailable. ■
