Colusa softball ends SVL play with sweep of Live Oak

Colusa’s Abby Myers is congratulated by Coach Jamie Lay after she hit a grand slam in the RedHawks’ 7-6 win over Live Oak on May 3.

Colusa softball finished the regular season strong, posting two victories over Live Oak last week that allowed the RedHawks (13-14, 8-6) to move ahead of the Lions in the standings and finish fourth in the Sacramento Valley League.

Hosting Live Oak on May 3, Colusa overcame some sloppy play in the field to edge the Lions 7-6.

Abby Myers, in her last regular season home game for the RedHawks, did some major damage at the plate, driving in a run in the first inning with a single, before launching a grand slam in the second.

Yet, Live Oak took advantage of Colusa’s miscues in the field to claw their way back and force a 6-6 tie.

But the RedHawks were not to be denied and rallied for the game winner in the bottom of the fifth, when a single by Brooklyn Bradbury plated Reese Roper, who had gotten things started for the RedHawks with a one-out single.

Myers had a monster day going 3 for 4, with five RBI. Bradbury was 3 for 3 with a double and an RBI, while Abby Wolf finished 2 for 3 with a double.

Avery Lay earned the win in the circle, striking out six and surrendering just three hits.
In Live Oak on May 5, the RedHawks spoiled the Lions’ Senior Day, again relying on the long ball to pull off the 5-1 victory.

Anahi Guzman provided the big blow, a three-run blast in the top of the third.
Roper went 2 for 3 with a double, while Myers, Ava Garcia and Naomi Silva accounted for Colusa’s three other hits.

Garcia additionally was lights out in the circle, fanning 11 and scattering four hits.
The RedHawks learned their playoff fate after the Pioneer Review deadline on Wednesday, when Northern Section CIF Division IV brackets were released. ■
