Colusa girls’ basketball riding six game streak

Since coming off the winter break, the Colusa High School girls’ basketball team has been on a hot streak, winning six straight games, and getting off to a 4-0 start against Sacramento Valley League opponents.

Three of those victories came last week, as the RedHawks sandwiched a non-conference 49-42 triumph over Sutter, between wins over SVL foes Willows and East Nicolaus.

Last Tuesday, Colusa downed Willows 59-38 on the road, behind freshman guard Danica Chavez, who poured in 22 points and made nine steals.

Senior Abby Myers recorded a double-double with 10 points and 10 rebounds, while Karsyn Gwinnup collected 10 boards against the Honkers.

In a close contest with visiting Sutter, the RedHawks found themselves down six points after the opening period, but outscored the Huskies in the remaining three quarters to prevail.

Chavez dropped 20 points in the win for Colusa, who also got a double-double from senior Reese Roper that included 14 points and 15 boards, and was her fifth of the season.

The RedHawks concluded last week at home downing East Nicolaus 51-38 on Jan. 21, after Roper tossed in a career-high 20 points and Chavez added 17.

Colusa (12-6, 4-0) had two tough tests on the road earlier this week when they faced Durham (13-6, 5-0) on Monday and Pierce (12-6, 2-0) on Wednesday before returning home to face Live Oak (4-7, 0-4) on Friday.
