After dropping four of their first five matches on the road to start the season, the RedHawks have returned to Colusa County and found their confines to their liking, as they won three straight last week, defeating Williams, Marysville, and Hamilton City.
In Williams on Dec. 6, Colusa shutout the previously unbeaten ‘Jackets, and downed their rivals 2-0 behind two goals from freshman Josslyn Garcia.
Senior goalkeeper Briana Pinon kept a clean sheet for the contest, while sophomore Allie Reading spearheaded the RedHawks’ defensive line.
Colusa then followed up the next day by blanking visiting Marysville 2-0.
Freshman Ava Garcia put the RedHawks in front 1-0, capitalizing on an assist from senior Lissandra Fuerte in the first half, before junior Adamari Hernandez tacked on an insurance goal after intermission.
Pinon recorded her second shutout in as many days, and Reading had another big day on defense to draw praise from Coach Laura Cervantes.
“Allie is in her first year, and she has been an amazing contributor to our program. She was definitely our show stopper in Williams and was nothing short of that against Marysville,” Cervantes said.
To round out the week, the RedHawks avenged a narrow loss they suffered in the first game of the year to Hamilton City, by downing the Braves 2-1 at home on Dec. 9.
After a scoreless first half, a strike by Josslyn Garcia put the RedHawks on the board, but the game winner came off the foot of senior Jorel Azevedo, who found the back of the net on a corner kick.
Colusa (4-4) was scheduled to meet Yreka in Redding on Wednesday and host Oroville today at home, before opening play in their own tournament, which runs this Friday and Saturday. ■
