Playing last Thursday night in Sacramento against Valley High School, Pierce junior Jocelyn Medina broke a 16-year old Northern Section record when she dropped 61 points in the Bears’ 71-61 win over the host Vikings.
Medina, who is averaging 40.1 points per game in nine contests this season, got warmed up earlier in the week when she went for 47 and 48 points respectively, in losses to Capital Christian (Sacramento) on Dec. 6, and Central Valley (Shasta Lake) on Dec. 7.
It was at Valley’s tournament, however, that Medina posted a career-high 61-points to best the previous record of 52.
On the night, Medina made 13 field goals, drained nine threes, and went eight for 10 from the free throw line.
In setting the new mark, Medina surpassed joint record holders Danielle Orsillo (Las Plumas) and Allison Wong (Mercy).
Orsillo set the initial record in 2005, while Wong reached the mark in 2008.
While Orsillo holds the top three season scoring totals in Northern Section history, including the record of 1,072, Medina has 361 points with at least 20 more games yet to play, and, at her current pace, certainly has a chance to top that number as well. ■
