Colusa girls’ basketball breaks even last week

After picking up a 48-42 road win in Lower Lake on December 6, the RedHawks went 1-2 at the Lady Trojan Classic in Durham, sandwiching a 50-44 overtime victory over Hamilton City, in between narrow losses to Fall River and Yreka.

While Colusa held Lower Lake to just 13 first half points, the RedHawks had to hold off the Trojans’ second half rally to clinch the win.

Freshman Danica Chavez continued her impressive rookie season, scoring a game-high 16 points.

Senior Abby Myers finished with 13 points, while fellow senior Reese Roper recorded the first of her four double-doubles last week, with 10 points and 13 rebounds.

In Durham on Dec. 9 to start tournament play, Colusa found itself tied with Fall River, heading into the final period, but several miscues by the RedHawks proved too much to overcome, as they fell to the Bulldogs 57-55.

Roper was good for 17 points and 11 rebounds, while Chavez tossed in 17 points as well.

Against Hamilton City, Colusa held the Braves to just four points in the overtime period, to emerge victorious, as Chavez dropped in 13 points. Roper added 12 points and collected 14 rebounds, while Carly Simmons grabbed nine boards.

Facing Yreka in their final game of the week, the RedHawks suffered another close loss, falling 49-46 to the Miners, despite strong efforts by All-Tournament selections Chavez and Roper with 16 and 13 points, respectively, and Roper clearing 13 rebounds.

Next up for Colusa (5-3) is a three game stint at the Marty Passaglia Invitational in Hamilton City, which begins today and runs through Saturday.
