Colusa volleyball sweeps Pierce

Colusa’s Reese Roper hits an angle shot around the block attempt by Pierce’s Jaylianna Valencia. Roper had nine kills in the RedHawks’ win.

A spirited crowd gathered in the Natalie Corona Gymnasium last Thursday night to take in the match between Pierce and Colusa, but nothing dissuaded the RedHawks, who methodically dismantled the young Bear squad by scores of 25-13, 25-13, 25-20.

Although both sides struggled in service early on, Colusa rectified the situation by using their strength at the line to keep Pierce off balance and out of system most of the night.

The RedHawks also held the advantage at the net, as Reese Roper and Karsyn Gwinnup led the attack with nine and seven kills respectively, while Abby Myers dished out 24 assists.

For the Bears, Jaylianna Valencia and Jamie Figueroa both tallied four kills apiece.

Earlier last week Colusa downed Willows 25-11, 26-24, 32-30, while Pierce handled Durham 25-14, 25-22, 28-26.

With last week’s wins, the RedHawks (21-2, 5-0) are in firm control of the Sacramento Valley League and riding a 13-game win streak.

Pierce (8-13, 4-2) finds itself two games back and third in the SVL.

Both teams were back at it this week, with Colusa home to Durham on Tuesday and in Winters tonight, while the Bears were in Live Oak on September 28 and travel to Paradise this evening.
