Colusa volleyball makes it 11 straight

Colusa’s Leah Ferrara celebrates a point in the RedHawks’ match with East Nicolaus on Sept. 16. Ferrara served for some critical points in the win over the Spartans.

After picking up two more wins over Sacramento Valley League opponents last week, the Colusa RedHawks have extended their win streak to 11 matches and have earned the No. 3 ranking in the Northern Section, behind only West Valley and Chico.

Colusa began last week with an easy sweep of visiting Paradise 25-9, 25-11, 25-16 on Sept. 14, where they were powered by eight kills from Karsyn Gwinnup.

Setter Abby Myers continued her consistent play, dispensing 25 assists, while Lexi Avera served five aces.

In their second home match of the week, the RedHawks (19-2, 3-0) were taken to four sets by a scrappy and athletic East Nicolaus team, but emerged victorious 25-13, 25-12, 23-25, 25-19.

Leading the way against the Spartans was Reese Roper, who notched a double-double with 14 kills and 10 digs.

Gwinnup hammered another 10 kills and made four blocks, Myers handed out 25 assists, and Avera delivered 11 digs from the back row.

Another strength, not only in the East Nicolaus match but all season long, has been the RedHawks’ serving, and one of the best performers in that capacity has been Leah Ferrara.

Ferrara served seven straight points against the Spartans to bring Colusa from behind and give them the lead in the fourth set.

This week should be a little tougher for the RedHawks, who welcomed Willows on Tuesday night and head to Arbuckle this evening to take on their county rival, Pierce.
