Pierce, Colusa golfers back on the links

Pierces Luke Voorhees sinks a putt at the practice match with Colusa at the Arbuckle Golf Club on February 8.

High school golf in Colusa County got underway last Monday, Feb. 8, at the Arbuckle Golf Club when the Pierce Bears hosted the Colusa RedHawks in a nine-hole practice match and claimed bragging rights with a nine-stroke, 258-267 victory.

Luke Voorhees led the Bears carding a 45, Ryan Travis posted a 49, and Alex High finished with a 51, while Bryce Murphy with a 54 and Matt Reyna with a 59 rounded out the team.

It was an outing that pleased first year coach Justin Chambers.

” I think we did well for our first match of the year.  We have a hard time avoiding the trees which leads to high numbers so we will need to go back to the drawing board on that, but we will take a win over Colusa any day of the week,” said Chambers, the former Pleasant Valley High golf standout who now teaches PE at Johnson Junior High School.

However, while the Bears won the match, it was Colusas Logan Book who turned in the best round of the day with a 44.

Completing the RedHawk team was Chase Carrere (54), Madison Reister (55), Clayton Randolph (55), and Mason Saso (59).

While it was the only match of the week for the Bears, the RedHawks followed up with another one against Durham on Feb. 10, at the Colusa Golf and Country Club, although no scores were provided.

Both Pierce and Colusa returned to action on Tuesday, Feb. 16, in Colusa. ™£
