Over the past two seasons, Pierce’s Jocelyn Medina has posted the top two highest scoring games in Northern Section girls basketball history, and after dropping 52 last Tuesday in the Bears’ 63-57 win over Colusa, the senior has added her name to another line in the record book.
With the second 52 point outpouring of her career, Medina led Pierce to a comeback win over the RedHawks to keep the Bears’ 15 game win streak alive.
As in the earlier meeting between the two squads on Jan. 17, Colusa jumped out to an early lead, holding a 15-13 advantage after the first quarter, but the Bears, behind Medina, methodically reeled in and overtook the RedHawks by halftime.
And while Colusa didn’t go down without a fight, closing the gap to just three points heading into the final quarter, Pierce held on for the six point win.
In addition to her game high point total, Medina completed the double-double with 10 boards in addition to making seven steals.
Cindy Corona pitched in with six rebounds for the Bears, who captured the Sacramento Valley League title and completed their second straight undefeated season in conference play after a win over Live Oak on Feb. 10.
For the RedHawks, in spite of the loss, the future looks bright as a trio of sophomores turned in an admirable effort against Pierce.
Danica Chavez finished with a team high 19 points, while Alena Sanchez and Carlie Sanchez tossed in 13 and 10 points, respectively.
Colusa then went on to down Paradise 45-31 the following evening, as 10 different players broke into the scoring column, but could not replicate the feat in Durham as they fell 30-34 on Friday.
Carly Simmons led the RedHawks with eight points in the win over the Bobcats, while Chavez had 14 points in the loss to the Trojans.
This week, both teams will compete in the Northern Section Division IV playoffs with No. 3 Pierce earning a first round bye and No. 9 Colusa hitting the road to face No. 8 Yreka on Tuesday.
Should the RedHawks prevail, they will head to Susanville to take on No. 1 Lassen tonight, while the Bears will entertain the winner between No. 6 Central Valley and No. 11 Oroville.■
