COLUSA, CA (MPG) – Seven students in the Health and Martial Arts Center’s Shorin-Ryu Shorinkan classes offered through the City of Colusa Parks and Recreation Department earned their purple belt rank May 6 during class at City Hall.
The students recognized were Christopher Roland, Claire Finnen, Henry Finnen, Scarlet Martinez, Ramiro Solis, David Murray and Emily Murray.
Along with the purple belt designation, each student received a circular patch to sew onto their martial arts uniform. According to instructors, the patch is the only patch awarded in Shorin-Ryu Shorinkan and is presented at the sixth of eight belt levels in the program.
The achievement marks the first time students in the Colusa program have reached the rank level since the local program began in 2023 under the direction of Renshi Rod Brayfindley. The patches are purchased in Okinawa, Japan, where the martial art originated.
Shorin-Ryu Shorinkan is an Okinawan martial art that includes stand-up fighting, throws and ground fighting techniques.
“I was shocked and very impressed that the first students to earn this rank were some of our younger members,” Sensei Rod Brayfindley said. “I am impressed and I am proud.”
