
MT. SHASTA CITY, CA (MPG) – Maxwell’s track team was in top form last Thursday at the Mountain Valley Championships as the varsity boys claimed the crown for the second straight year blowing past second place Providence Christian, while the varsity girls finished second overall behind Hope High School.
Leading the Panther boys was Tanner Vierra, who in addition to winning both the high jump and long jump with subsequent marks of 5-10 and 20-05.5, anchored the 4×100 relay team comprised of Victor Martinez, Connor Pearson and Erik New, that crossed the line first in a time of 48.68.
Also making a big contribution was Evan Mathis who ran a personal best of 11:04.94 to win the 3200 meters in addition to finishing the 800 with a career record time 2:25.68 which was good for second.
Maxwell picked up five other silver medals, including Celestino Corona (55.40) in the 400 meters, Martinez (21.17-PB) in the 110 meter hurdles, Karter Burt (50.40-PB) in the 300 meter hurdles, Pearson (38-08) in the shot put and Logan Lazarus (116-11) in the discus.

Princeton, which also competed at the meet, had Robert Guzman take third in the three sprint races finishing the 100 in 12.29, the 200 in 24.96 and the 400 in a personal best 57.41.
Meanwhile for the Panther girls, Jane Silva (56.35) took first in 300 meter hurdles, finished second in the 100 meter hurdles in a personal best time of 17.93, then came in second in the 100 after running a 13.89.
Maxwell also saw Karina Perez (28-3.75) win the triple jump and the quartet of Perez, Erin Dennis, Gia Rudiger and Mia Gonzalez take first in the 4×100 relay in a time of 56.35.
Jadyn Karlonas set two personal bests to garner second place in the 400 with a 1:05.45 and the 800 in a mark of 2:36.78, while Jordyn Minutti (73-03) was second in the discus.
Fifteen Panther athletes qualified to the Northern Section Division IV Finals that were held on May 13 at West Valley High School in Cottonwood.
