Baseball:
Pierce 6 – Live Oak 5 (4/18)
Pierce 17 – Live Oak 12 (4/21)
Two wins over Live Oak last week brought an end to the Bears’ three game slide with just two series remaining in the regular season.
In Live Oak for the first game, Pierce put three runs on the board in the second inning, but needed a three-run rally in the final frame to edge the Lions.
Six Bear batters, including Brayden Hoebel, Ky Wooldridge, Colton Vanlaningham, Julian Camberos, Luke Myers and Tony Maldonado recorded hits in the win.
Maldonado also drove in a pair of runs, while Vanlangingham and Camberos each had an RBI.
Pierce then concluded the week with a wild contest at home in which they banged out 18 hits to sweep the season series from the Lions.
Maldonado was a perfect 4 for 4 at the plate with two doubles and two RBI, Vanlanginham went for 4 for 5 doubling twice and knocking in a pair of runs, while Danny Rubio also had a multiple-hit game finishing 3 for 4 with three RBI.
Currently fifth in the Sacramento Valley League, Pierce (7-10, 4-6) looked to continue its winning ways when it took on Durham at home on Tuesday before hitting the road to face the Trojans again on Friday. ■
Maxwell 11 – Lindhurst 4 (4/18)
Maxwell 0 – Delta 10 (4/19)
A bye week saw the Panthers (5-10, 3-1) travel to face non-conference opponents Lindhurst and Delta.
Against the Blazers, Maxwell put five runs on the board in the first inning and never looked back as they cruised to a win.
Brody Jones had two hits and two RBI, Edgar Izquierdo also picked up two hits, while Yahir Alcaraz, Karter Burt and Robert Waite all singled.
Things didn’t go as well the following day in Clarksburg as Alcaraz accounted for the only hit of the game for the Panthers.
This week Maxwell returned to Mid-Valley League competition when they welcomed Biggs to town on Tuesday, then complete the series against the Wolverines on the road this Friday.■
Softball:
Colusa 0 – Willows 4 (4/18)
Colusa 3 – Gridley 6 (4/19)
Colusa 0 – Willows 3 (4/20)
The RedHawks couldn’t get the bats going in two Sacramento Valley League games last week as they suffered two no-hit shutout losses to second place Willows, and then additionally dropped a non-conference game in Gridley.
A bright spot for Colusa was the pitching of sophomore Ava Garcia, who kept the RedHawks in the games against the Honkers as she scattered five hits and struck out four in the first meeting, then fanned seven in the second contest where she conceded eight hits.
Statistics from the game against Gridley were not provided.
Sitting fourth in the SVL, the RedHawks (6-7, 5-3) had a tough task this week when it squared off against the unbeaten East Nicolaus Spartans at home on Tuesday and then in Trowbridge on Friday. ■
