Colusa girls fall in SVL opener

Colusa’s Alena Sanchez makes a pass in a game last month. Sanchez had 18 points in the RedHawks’ loss to East Nicolaus on Jan. 4.

Alena Sanchez hit six threes and finished with 18 points, and Carly Simmons added 12 points, but it wasn’t enough as the RedHawks fell to East Nicolaus 51-41 in their Sacramento Valley League opener on Jan. 4.

Suiting up just seven players, Colusa cut the deficit to four points after three quarters, but were held to eight points in the final period and, as a result, suffered its first league loss.

The RedHawks (7-8, 0-1) looked to even both their overall and league record starting Monday in Winters, which was followed by a home game against Willows on Wednesday. A Friday night contest in Live Oak will close out the week.
