‘Jackets, Hawks continue rivalry on pitch

Colusa and Williams players battle for control of a ball in a match between the two squads on December 6 in Colusa.

Over the years, some of the best battles on the pitch have been between county rivals Colusa and Williams, and last Tuesday’s doubleheader was no exception as the Yellowjacket girls topped the RedHawks 2-0, while the boys contest ended in a 0-0 draw.

In the early match, the visiting ‘Jackets got first half goals from Brisa Garcia and Isabella Santillan, which proved to be all that was necessary as the Williams defense kept the RedHawks at bay.

Colusa, which has had issues finding the back of the net so far this season, had chances, but Yellowjacket goalkeeper Trinity Tungasmita kept a clean sheet, and was helped considerably by a back line led by Celeste Ramirez, along with Santillan, who was impressive in controlling the mid-field and dropping back in defense as well.

It was the only match of the week for Williams (2-0), while the RedHawks (0-5) hosted Corning on December 8, although no score was reported.

In the nightcap, both the RedHawk and ‘Jacket boys had chances, but neither squad could convert its opportunities with Williams taking 15 shots while Colusa attempted 14.

Both goalkeepers made noteworthy efforts with the Hawks’ Andy Lopez turning away 10 shots and in the process recorded his third straight shutout, while Yellowjackets’ Jair Rivera made seven saves.

Colusa (3-2-2) followed up with its second straight 0-0 outcome when it hosted Corning last Thursday, then hit the road to play in the Battle of the Buttes Tournament where it lost, 0-4 to Wheatland, the runner-up in the NorCal State Tournament a season ago, before handling Oroville 4-0, and finally dropping a close one to Pleasant Valley 0-1.

Williams also closed out the week participating in the Battle of the Buttes Tournament where it posted two shutouts, edging Sutter 1-0 then taking care of Marysville 2-0 behind two goals from Ernie Lemus.

The Yellowjackets (3-0-2) were scheduled to play in the championship game on Saturday, but it was postponed due to weather.

This week both Williams teams were in Winters on Tuesday, and host Willows today, while the Colusa squads traveled to Hamilton City on Tuesday for their only scheduled matches.
