Wrestlers convene in Williams

Members of the Yellowjacket wrestling team pose for a photo at a meet in Yuba City earlier this season.

A large crowd filled the Williams gymnasium on Dec. 17 where it was treated to a five-team wrestling meet that included some 40 matches before all was said and done.

Organized by Williams coach Nik Willis, the meet was co-hosted by the Yellowjackets and Pierce Bears, and attended by squads from East Nicolaus, Willows, and Winters, as well.

It was a big success for the ‘Jackets, not only in putting on the event, but on the mat as well.

Williams assistant coach Scott Stephens reported that Jonathon Benitez, Jesus Zuniga, Luis Vega-Ramirez, Gustavo Garcia, and Jose Rodriguez all defeated their opponents by fall, while Luis Martinez earned a win with an 11-8 decision.

On Saturday, Dec. 10, the local grapplers traveled to River Valley High School to participate in the 12th Annual Dow Lewis Memorial Battle of the Buttes Tournament that featured about 50 schools and over 400 competitors.

Results from the meet were not available before the time of press.
