County cross country teams off and running

Runners start the course at Williams High School in the first Mid-Valley League meet of the season on Sept. 21.

All four county cross country teams were in action last Wednesday with Colusa and Pierce participating in a Sacramento Valley League meet, hosted by Paradise, while Williams and Maxwell gathered along with teams from Durham, Hamilton City, and Redding Christian at Williams High School for the first Mid-Valley League contest.

Running at the Magalia Disc Golf Course, Colusa’s varsity boy’s team placed five runners in the top 10, with Kevin Sarabia (18:27), Benji Granados (18:46), and Cesar Cruz (19:01) leading the way in second, third, and fourth place, respectively.

Rounding out the top finishers were Jose Ceron (19:07) in sixth, and Jared Sager (20:47) in 10th.
Among the varsity girls, Colusa’s Estefania Gutierrez (28:25) claimed fifth place, outpacing Pierce’s Yasmin Szmurlo (29:03) and Audrey Cline (30:00) in sixth and seventh place, along with RedHawk teammate Naomi Silva (30:45) in ninth.

Once again, the RedHawks dominated the JV boys’ race by shutting out the competition on the two-mile of course, as they took the first seven spots, with Rafa Avila turning in the fastest time of 15:22.

Following in succession were teammates Luis Flores (15:27), Edwin Fierros (15:36), Karim Cruz (15:36), Trenton Griffith (15:42), William England (15:56), and Brian Hernandez (16:19).

In the JV girls’ competition, Colusa’s Rajdeep Shoker (17:31) and Bella Badaluco (18:25) crossed the line in first and second place.

Pierce’s Karina Grajedra (18:46) was third, ahead of three RedHawks, including Josslyn Garcia (18:48) in fourth, Giselle Valdes (19:08) in fifth, Shaheen Orr (19:36) in sixth, and fellow Bear Carla Moreno (20:01) in seventh.

In Williams, at the MVL meet, all participants ran in one race on a three-mile course, circling the campus.

As a result, official results were not available prior to the Pioneer Review print deadline.
This Wednesday, Colusa and Pierce reconvened at the Arbuckle Golf Course for the second SVL meet, while MVL teams made their way to Durham. â–
