Fourteen Colusa County boys basketball players received recognition for their efforts on the hardwood in the first full season since the COVID pandemic began.
Pierce’s Guillermo Jauregui, the only local player named to the All-Northern Section team, along with Princeton’s Junior Andrade, the section’s leading scorer, highlight the list that includes some of the county’s most consistent performers as well.
Here is the breakdown of each team’s most outstanding players in their respective leagues:
Sacramento Valley League
Pierce: Three seniors, including Jauregui, Ryan Travis, and Daniel Salud, were named to the All-League team for the Bears (20-10, 11-1), who beat Durham in the final game of the regular season to grab a share of the SVL crown before finishing as the NSCIF Division IV runner-up. Jauregui was the team’s stat leader on both ends of the floor, averaging 9.4 points and 5.9 rebounds per game. Travis added just over eight points and three steals each outing and Salud chipped in with 7.9 points and 3.3 boards.
Colusa: The third place RedHawks (17-11, 7-3) saw senior Ethan Lay and sophomore Landon Humphrey recognized for their efforts. Lay was Colusa’s leading rebounder, averaging 5.6 per contest, and added 8.8 points on offense, while Humphrey, in his first varsity season, was the team’s leading scorer at 10.5 points per game.
Pioneer Valley League
Princeton: An up-and-coming Eagles squad (12-9, 5-1) claimed the PVL championship in 2022 and then ended the season as the NSCIF Division VII runner-up after falling to Chester in the title game. One major reason for the team’s success was sophomore Junior Andrade, the league co-MVP who averaged 28.8 points per game. Joining Andrade on the All-PVL squad was junior Alex Medina, whose stat line included 11 points and five rebounds per game, along with senior Cris Winn (4.8 ppg, 6.5 rpg) and sophomore Humberto Reynoso (5.9 ppg).
Mid-Valley League
Williams: It was somewhat of a frustrating season for the Yellowjackets, who at times suited just five players, but still managed a third place finish in the MVL with a record of 14-7, 4-3. Still the ‘Jackets’ Leo Trujillo was named league MVP after the junior averaged 22.2 points and 6.8 boards per game, despite missing the final two games due to injury. Junior Brian Rosales, another supremely talented athlete, finished the season averaging 18.1 points, 4.3 rebounds, and 2.7 steals per contest to earn recognition, as did senior Jayr Ramirez, who contributed just over 10 points per game.
Five Star League
Maxwell: Two juniors, Dillon Dry and Berto Lara, represented the Panthers (12-9, 5-1) on the All-FSL team. Although statistics were not available, the duo should serve as the core of next year’s squad. ■
