Colusa’s volleyball season came to an end last Tuesday night at home as the No. 6 RedHawks were upended by the visiting No. 11 Urban Blues, 20-25, 19-25, 16-25, in the first round of the 2021 CIF State Girls Volleyball Division V Tournament.
As in the loss they suffered on Nov. 6, in the section finals to U-Prep, against Urban, the RedHawks found themselves at a distinct disadvantage, in terms of height, which was evident as they struggled at the net all match long.
Additionally, Colusa often seemed out of sorts against the Blues, making uncharacteristic errors both at the service line and with the ball in play.
Senior Reese Roper had another strong all-around performance, making 20 service receptions and eight digs in addition to registering seven kills.
Fellow senior Leah Ferrara led the RedHawk attack, finishing with nine kills, while Abby Myers, also in her last game for Colusa, handed out 23 assists to go along with 14 digs and five kills.
It was a tough loss for coach Kim Roper, who has spent the last six years coaching most of her squad through the club ranks and JV level, but it was an experience she will always remember.
“For my first full official season as varsity coach, I am proud of the girls’ accomplishments,” Roper said. “We were the undefeated champions of our league and will cherish the memories we created. I was lucky to have such a talented group of young ladies, and I am looking forward to what the future holds for CHS volleyball.”
While the RedHawks (32-9) will lose seven seniors to graduation, they will start next season with a core of experienced returners, led by current juniors Karsyn Gwinnup in the middle, defensive specialist Lexy Avera, and Carly Simmons, who played all the way around at times this season. ■
