Pierce girls basketball has strong outing against PV

Pierces Jocelyn Medina (left) and Mayra Sanchez (right) share a smile after Sanchezs third quarter basket in the Bears game against Pleasant Valley on May 14.

A shorthanded Pierce team gave the visitors from Pleasant Valley High School in Chico a run for their money, but the Vikings turned it on in the final period to defeat the Bears 51-41.

While at the outset it looked as through the game might get away from the Bears, as the Vikings jumped out to an 8-1 advantage, Pierce fought back to take an 11-10 lead by the end of the first quarter.

Sophomore sensation Jocelyn Medina kept the Bears in the game throughout the second and third quarters as the two teams entered the final period with the game tied 35-35.

Yet, it was not to be for Pierce, who struggled on the boards all game long, and then were outscored 16-6 over the final eight minutes.

Medina, displaying her versatility, drained five shots from beyond the arc, in addition to showing the ability to take the ball to the basket, which resulted in a game high 35 points, although it was not enough to offset the balanced attack of the Vikings.

This week, the Bears were scheduled to be at Chico High on May 18, before returning home to host Winters and Colusa on May 20 and 21 respectively.
