Come park with me: Great start to a new year

Thomas Roach, Guest Columnist

A wonderful welcome to 2023. The rain has brought much needed water to our area and provided an excellent start to the new year for our trees. The parks look fabulous with all the trees making it through these heavy storms. An excellent job by the city crew keeping on top of everything.

The Heritage Tree Program has taken the first step in putting together a list of suggested trees to be included. As of now, 16 trees are on their way to being recognized and honored with the distinction of being a heritage tree. The following trees are to be considered; Atlas Juniper, 120 10th St.; Deodora Cedar, 4th St. at the levee; Heritage Orange tree, 220 6th St.; Magnolia, 706 Jay St; California Fan Palms on Main St.; Sycamore, 200 block on 6th Street; Walnut, 444 8th St.; Bay Tree, 1052 Clay St.; Majestic Oak, 1013 Bridge St.; two Cork Oaks, 341 Caron St.; Sycamore, 924 Oak St.; Eucalyptus, at the State Park; Sycamore, 418 8th St.; Cork Oak, in Davison Park; and the Walnut, 1061 Oak St.

Thank you for the suggestions. Please continue to seek out and suggest trees you would like to see on the list.

We have a new Recreation Coordinator. A warm welcome to Cliff Burrios. He brings an enthusiastic, welcoming attitude to the Colusa Parks and Recreation Department. He is in the process of providing activities to all the residents. If there is an activity that you would like to see provided by the recreation department, please give our new coordinator a call.

The City of Colusa and the Colusa Rotary are ramping up the second wave of tree plantings. I absolutely love this program. It really shows the power of our community in providing for future generations a beautiful canopy of beautiful trees. Please let your neighbors know that they can have trees in their front strip for a fee of $25. Rotary and the city do all the work, and the community gains more trees. Contact city hall or go to the city’s web page to obtain the form.

We have a full body with the appointment of Jamie Davis-Meyer to the Colusa Parks, Recreation and Trees Commission. She brings a passion and excitement that is welcomed by the community. It is a joy to hear her insight on how to best maintain our wonderful trees. She fills the position with outgoing commissioner Joseph Berger, whose presence will be missed. Thank you, Joseph, for your contribution. â–
