Letter to the editor (Sept. 2, 2021)

Dear Editor,

On Aug. 27, a public hearing notice was published in the Pioneer Review. The (City of Colusa) Planning Commission will review and potentially approve the following item: A resolution approving a fitness and nutrition guidance business to operate as a home occupation at 1147 Webster St. in accordance with City of Colusa zoning 5.04.

The proposed business is a gym in a residential garage. The gym does not have a business license and has been illegally operating for the last 10 months. Hours for gym class are 5 AM to 7 PM, Monday through Saturday. The garage door is open, gym equipment is strewn into the driveway. Loud music, loud voices, bright lights, cars parking in front of neighboring residences, constant beeping and flashing lights as clients lock their cars begins just before 5 AM, six days a week.

If the Planning Commission and the City of Colusa approve a home business of this nature, it would set a bad precedent for the city. If one garage gym is approved in a quiet residential zone, how many more garage gyms will be allowed?

Yes, it can happen in your neighborhood! I encourage you to call or write to the City of Colusa Planning Commission and Planning Department to express your concerns.
