Coming off a bye week, the Princeton Eagles made the trek north to Hayfork last Thursday afternoon and came away with a 48-20 win over the Timberjacks in a California-Division II 8-man League game.
After a close first half that saw Princeton holding a 20-14 advantage at intermission, the Eagles came alive in the second half, outscoring Hayfork 28-6, behind a huge game from senior Cris Winn.
Normally a running back, Winn stepped in for quarterback Jose Hernandez, who was injured in the second quarter, and carried the offense as he rushed 18 times for 249 yards, including touchdown runs of 37, six, 53 and five yards, in addition to tossing two touchdown passes.
Before leaving the game, Hernandez had scored on a 75 yard run, and also tossed a 42-yard touchdown pass to Corwyn Robeson.
Robeson, a sophomore, was also on the receiving end of touchdown passes of 37 and 20 yards from Winn, to complete the game with a total of three catches for 99 yards.
Also making a noteworthy contribution to the Eagles’ attack was junior Alessandro Sullivan, who rushed 15 times for 101 yards and had two catches for two-point conversions.
Defensively, senior Jack Sierra collected a team-high 19 tackles, with Robeson and Sullivan not far behind, after making 15 and 14 tackles, respectively.
Princeton (4-1, 2-1) now finds itself in a tie for second in the league standings and is scheduled to host winless Butte Valley, a team they shutout 46-0 last month, on Friday night at 6 PM. ■
