Pierce Boys, Colusa Girls Tops at SVL Track Meet

The Bears’ JR Figueroa won the 110 meter hurdles race at the second SVL meet on April 22 in Paradise.

PARADISE, CA (MPG) – Sacramento Valley League track and field athletes convened at Paradise High School on April 22 for the second conference meet with the Pierce boys and Colusa girls taking first in their respective varsity divisions.

For the Bears it was another dominant performance, as they massed 183 points on the day, outscoring second place Willows by 75 points.

Pierce swept the sprints with Nate Macintosh capturing both the 100 meters and 200 meters in respective times of 11.37 and 23.67, while in the 400, Samuel Corona (55.34) also posted a first place finish.

JR Figueroa (17:01) crossed the line first in the 110 meter hurdles as did the Bears’ 4×100 relay team consisting of Jonathan Vazquez Hernandez, Thomas Sweet, Kashius Nunley and MacIntosh, which set a new team best of 44.88.

Sweet additionally won the long jump with a mark of 18-09 then took the triple jump as well going 41-11.

Rounding out the eight firsts for Pierce was Demian Vega, who prevailed in the high jump after clearing 5-08.

On the girl’s side, Colusa edged out Pierce by 12 points, tallying 115 to the Bears’ 103.

It was a mixed bag in the sprints, with the RedHawks’ Kendall Marengo (12.90) winning the 100, the Bears’ Rylie Delepierre (28.44) capturing the 200, while teammate Lyla Maldonado (1:06.54) won the 400.

Maldonado also claimed the victory in the 800 with a time of 2:44.95.

Colusa’s Shaheen Orr (19.31) was first in the 100 meter hurdles and fellow RedHawk Faith Sines (28-00) won the shot put.

In the relays, Colusa out ran the competition in both the 4×100 and 4×400 despite missing some of their regulars.

The quartet of Orr, Lizbet Ayala, Itzel Cruz and Marengo ran a 52.61 in the 4×100, while Orr, Eloise Guerrero, Marengo and Cruz looked strong in the 4×400 crossing the line in 4:37.75.

Meanwhile, at West Valley’s Invitational in Cottonwood on April 24, Marengo had a big day setting a personal best time of 25.82 to win the 200, then finishing third in the 100 meters which another career record of 12.68.

Cruz (1:02.09) ran a personal best in the 400, which as good for third, while Williams’ Daisy Ruiz ran a 16.85 to take third in the 100 meter hurdles.

SVL teams reconvened in Winters on April 29 for the third meet of the regular season.
