Football Roundup (Oct. 20, 2023)

Colusa 40 – Durham 0

COLUSA, CA (MPG) – While the offense gave the homecoming crowd plenty to cheer about, the RedHawk defense deserves credit as well, after pitching its third shutout of the year and keeping Colusa unbeaten in seven tries.

Isaiah Travis continued his strong play this season and set the tone by making nine tackles, which included four sacks.

Aiden Selover, in just his second game back from injury, also made nine tackles, while Nicko Mata finished with seven, three of which were for losses.

On the other side of the ball, the RedHawks relied heavily on the ground game, which was led by Adan Travis, who carried nine times for 89 yards and two touchdowns.

Fellow running back, Will McCoy, averaged 16.9 yards on his three carries and scored once, while Isaiah Travis caught two touchdown passes from quarterback Bo Coronado.

Colusa, which has accrued 2519 yards of total offense and outscored its opponents 269-54, looks to extend its win streak tonight when it travels to Arostegui Stadium in Live Oak.

Pierce 27 – Live Oak 7

ARBUCKLE, CA (MPG) – A slow start found the Bears down 7-0 after two quarters, but they regrouped in the second half to score 27 unanswered points and send the homecoming crowd home happy.

“Live Oak stacked the box against us, which was smart,” said Coach Anthony Tapia. “But that led to Drew (Burnum) throwing three touchdown passes and us running it better in the second half.”

While no other statistics were available, Tapia commended the play of Humberto Esqueda, a first-year football player who his coach said has “willed his way into a starting spot through his commitment, and then got his first sack in a crucial moment” against the Lions.

Tapia also pointed to two others that he felt were rewarded for their hard work in practice including Tony Saavedra, who made an interception and Devin Garcia who hauled in his first pass in the win.

Pierce (5-2, 1-1) is in Trowbridge tonight to take on East Nicolaus.

Maxwell 43 – Etna 20

MAXWELL, CA (MPG) – The Panthers evened their overall record at 3-3 and 2-2 in the Cascade Valley League with a 43-20 homecoming victory over winless Etna.

Despite their record, the Lions came out strong against Maxwell taking an early lead, but as the game wore on ran out of gas against the better-conditioned Panthers.

According to Coach Lane Davis, Rudi Gonzalez had another sensational outing making three interceptions and recovering an onside kick then also praised Isaac Iniguez and Robert Waite for their productive efforts.

No statistics from the contest were available prior to the Pioneer Review submission deadline.

Tonight, the Panthers look for some revenge against visiting Fall River, the team that knocked them out of the playoffs a season ago.

Princeton 12 –

Big Valley 58

PRINCETON, CA (MPG) – Injuries continued to plague the Eagles, who after not having enough players to field a team two weeks ago, finished their game last Friday night with just eight.

Thus, it is a credit to the program and its athletes who continue to gut it out on Friday nights.

Despite the loss to the Bulldogs, Corwyn Roberson had a big night, rushing eight times for 193 yards, and a touchdown, then turning around and making 18 tackles on defense.

Chris Roberson had a five-yard touchdown reception and made 12 tackles, while Chris Rendon accounted for 10 tackles and Alexander Taylor recovered a fumble.

Princeton (1-5) hopes to heal up in time for tonight’s home game against Westwood.
