Maxwell 37 – Los Molinos 21
LOS MOLINOS, CA (MPG) – Underdogs coming into last Friday’s contest, the Panthers’ proved their detractors wrong by beating up on the hometown Bulldogs.
“Los Molinos underestimated us,” said Maxwell head coach Lane Davis. “But we played well in all three phases of the game again this week and were able to manipulate the situation to give ourselves a short field most of the night.”
Tanner Vierra got the Panthers on the board hauling in a nine-yard touchdown pass from Noel Velazquez, which was followed by a 17-yard scoop and score by Rudi Gonzalez.
Maxwell piled on more points when Velazquez connected with Eddie Izquierdo on a 55-yard touchdown pass, then got a 30-yard field goal from Gonzalez to go into intermission with a 24-7 advantage.
In the second half, Brody Jones added on with a nine-yard run, as did Robert Waite who carried it in from 25 yards away.
What has become clear over the past three games is that the Panther offense has been on a roll, moving the ball effectively and averaging 43.3 points per contest.
That success is something Davis attributes to the offensive scheme developed by coordinator Robert Wilson who knows a little something about winning given that between 2001-13 his Maxwell teams went 116-39.
Of course, the Maxwell defense has been pretty good too, holding its opponents to just 19.5 points per game so far this season. Off to a 2-0 start in Cascade Valley League play, the Panthers, whose overall record is 3-1, face a tough test tonight on the road against an unbeaten Portola squad.
Pierce 43 – Oroville 6
ARBUCKLE, CA (MPG) – The Bears put up 36 points in the first quarter then added one more in the second as they cruised to a victory over the winless Tigers at Gregg LeMaster Field.
Erick Montanez did some major damage on offense hauling in two touchdown passes from quarterback Drew Burnum then accounted for a third after finding pay dirt on a 37 yard run.
Pierce also got a pair of touchdowns from Nathan Gomez and an additional one from Roberto Ramirez, who scored on a pick six.
Head coach Anthony Tapia praised the play of Danny Tejada who had two sacks on defense and also the effort of Gavin Guynn, who he said is emerging as a factor for the Bears in all three phases of the game.
Another player that Tapia singled out was lineman Colton VanLaningham who showed his versatility this week when he slid over from his tackle position to play center.
Tonight Pierce (3-1) heads to Paradise’s Om Wraith Field for its Sacramento Valley League opener.H
