COLUSA COUNTY, CA (MPG) – Visiting Clear Lake last week exacted its revenge on Colusa for knocking the Cardinals out of the 2022 State Volleyball Championships when it outlasted the RedHawks 20-25, 25-23, 25-21, 15-25, 15-6 in the first match of the current season for both teams.
Despite getting strong performances from Elle Faris, Addison Lay, and Olivia Huskey, Colusa didn’t have enough to hold off the Cardinals.
Faris finished with 14 kills, 13 digs and 12 assists, Lay dished out 23 assists made 14 kills and had 11 digs, while Huskey made 26 service receptions and 19 digs.
Yet, the RedHawks bounced back two nights later when they downed Gridley in their second preseason match at Don Bransford Gymnasium by scores of 25-13, 25-16, 25-22. Colusa’s serving was a major factor in the win as they landed 12 aces and otherwise kept the Bulldogs out of system.
Cece Mitchum had a game-high 12 service points, while Huskey had another nice night with 10 points from the service line, 10 digs and 13 receptions.
Faris again powered the RedHawks with nine kills in addition to handing out 16 assists, while Lay also ended the match with 16 assists and pitched in with six kills.
In her second varsity match, Aliah Ramirez tallied seven kills. Colusa (1-1) started a big week on Tuesday in Corning, which was followed by back-to-back home matches Wednesday and Thursday against River Valley and Marysville respectively, before they try its hand in Sutter’s Battle of the Buttes Tournament on Saturday.
