Williams Yellowjackets

COLUSA COUNTY, CA (MPG) – It was a strong start to the season for the new-look Yellowjackets, who pummeled visiting Winters last week 25-15, 25-13, 25-20 behind Mia Rivera’s 14 kills and 10 aces.

Making their varsity debuts, setters Gisele Navarro and Ariana Paiz dished out 11 and seven assists respectively.

However, things didn’t go as well in the first road match as they fell to county rival Maxwell 14-25, 19-25, 24-26.

Coach Darren Robinson reported that while his team didn’t play particularly well in the first two sets, they continued to improve as the night went along.

“The girls fought hard, but we just had too many unforced errors,” said Robinson.

Andrea Rivera struck for nine kills to lead the ‘Jackets, while Mia Rivera had eight in the loss.

From there Williams (1-4) made its way to Chico where it competed in the Panther Invitational, against some top-notch competition from throughout the North State and while the team didn’t win a match, gained some valuable experience.

The young Yellowjacket squad was back at it earlier in the week when they hosted Durham on Aug. 22 and were on the road in Live Oak on Aug. 24.
