Panther softball falls to Biggs

Maxwell catcher Allie Wills throws down to second base in the Panthers’ game against Biggs on April 25.

Third place Maxwell could not take advantage of an opportunity to gain ground on second place Biggs last week, having fallen in two Mid-Valley League contests by scores of 3-11 and 3-5, respectively.

Playing at home on April 25, the Panthers were unable to get the timely hits they needed, as they struggled against the Wolverines’ freshman pitcher Gracie Sheppard.

Making matters worse, defensive miscues allowed Biggs to put five runs on the board in the first inning, a deficit from which Maxwell could not recover.

Ava Barrett had a nice day, with two doubles in three trips to the plate, while Shelby Dunlap, Teresita Salazar, and Sydnee Wilson had one hit apiece.

Yet, in the second game on April 28, the Panthers showed some grit on the road, taking a 3-1 lead into the top of the sixth inning, but the Wolverines rallied for four runs in the bottom of the frame and then held on to claim the narrow victory.

Allie Wills led the way for Maxwell, finishing 2 for 3. Dunlap went 2 for 4, while Barrett and Bailee Haywood each collected a hit. Jocelyn Lazarus accounted for three RBI.

Looking to finish the regular season strong, the Panthers (6-8-1, 4-4) made their way to Hamilton City on Tuesday. They will complete the series with the Braves on Friday. â–
