Colusa’s baseball team took advantage of Spring Break to face some unknown competition on the Central Coast and fared well, returning home as the winner at the Nipomo Titan Tournament.
Over the three-day event, which ran from April 10-12, the RedHawks went 3-1, topping Bishop Montgomery (Torrance) 4-1, walloping Santa Ynez 13-3 and Santa Maria 13-0, before being edged by the hometown Titans 4-5.
For the tournament, nine different players banged out 31 hits as Colusa, also the beneficiary of 25 walks, outscored its opponents 34-9.
A trio of juniors led the RedHawks at the plate with Will McCoy finishing 6 for 10 with three RBI, Luke Kalfsbeek going 5 for 12 with five RBI, and Sutter Moss, who also had five hits in 12 at bats and drove in three runs.
Pitching was once again an asset for Colusa as the staff struck out a combined 27 batters, while surrendering just 14 hits.
Kalfsbeek was stellar in the opener against Bishop Montgomery, a private school with approximately 845 students, tossing a complete game four-hitter and striking out 10.
On the season, the junior lefty has 60 strikeouts, a 45 percent k-rating and sports a 0.83 ERA over 34 innings of work, all of which are tops in the Northern Section.
Other RedHawk starters, turning in noteworthy efforts over multiple innings in Nipomo, included call-up Julian Mendiola, who struck out five and threw four innings of one-hit ball against Santa Maria, and Bo Coronado, who put in 3.2 innings on the hill against Santa Ynez, where he fanned five.
This week, Colusa (6-1) returned to SVL play against Willows at home on Tuesday, traveled to Gridley for a non-conference game on Wednesday, and will complete the season series with the Honkers in Willows on Friday.■
