A goal by Dylan Chapa in the 51st minute was just enough for No. 2 Williams to edge county rival and No. 7 seeded Colusa 1-0 in the first round of the Northern Section Division III boys soccer playoffs held last Thursday at McCarl Field.
Although the match was tight throughout, the Yellowjackets controlled possession, keeping the RedHawks on the defensive for most of the match.
Chapa’s goal was a header into the far corner of the net, past the reach of RedHawk goalkeeper Julius Cervantes, who performed admirably for the short-handed RedHawks, who were without the services of three of its senior starters.
Colusa did have a chance for the equalizer, late in the second half, with the ball inside the box, but the Yellowjacket defense was able to clear.
Williams (13-2-6) continued its title defense on Tuesday, Feb. 21, when it downed longtime Mid-Valley League rival Hamilton City 4-1 and will play for the Championship on Saturday.
With the loss, the RedHawks (6-10-4), who finished as the fourth place team in the Sacramento Valley League, saw their season come to an end. ■
