XC teams off and running

RedHawk harriers (from left) Benji Granados, Kevin Sarabia, and Cesar Cruz run at the front of the pack in the SVL’s varsity boys preview race on Sept. 14 at the Colusa-Sacramento River State Recreation Area.

Hosting Sacramento Valley League opponents Live Oak, Pierce, Willows, and Winters Sept. 14 in a preview meet on their newly renovated course at the Colusa-Sacramento River State Recreation Area, the 30-plus member RedHawks squad served notice that they are a force to be reckoned with this season.

Picking up where he left off a season ago, Colusa senior and 2021 state qualifier Kevin Sarabia posted the fastest time of the afternoon, outpacing 29 competitors with a 19:08 time in the 3.1 mile varsity boys race.

Directly behind Sarabia were three RedHawks teammates: Benji Granados (19:53), Cesar Cruz (19:57), and Jose Ceron (19:59) who finished second, third and fourth respectively.
Jared Sager (21:37) crossed the line in seventh place to round out Colusa’s team, while the Bears’ Jamison Porter (23:26) was 10th.

Pierce made a strong showing in the varsity girls race with Isabel Alvarado (31:15) winding up fourth, Yazmin Szmurlo (32:27) sixth, and Celeste Grajeda (34:11) seventh.

Two Colusa harriers also cracked the top 10 in the race with Estefania Gutierrez (32:18) in fifth and Naomi Munoz-Silva (34:26) in 10th place.

The RedHawks dominated both of the Frosh-Soph contests, with the Colusa boys shutting out the competition by capturing the first five spots, while the girls had four of the top five finishers.

Rafa Avila (13:06) set a blistering pace on the 2.1 mile course to win the race, and was followed by teammates Luis Flores (13:24), Klayten Wright (13:39), Trenton Griffith (13:40), and Edwin Fierros (13:54).

Colusa’s Rajdeep Shoker (15:41) won the JV girls race, while Bella Badaluco (16:26) ended in second place, Gisselle Valdes (17:20) was fourth, and Shaleen Orr (17:29) fifth.
Pierce’s Karina Grajedra (17:00) took the third spot.

SVL teams made the trek to Magalia on Wednesday for their first league meet, which was hosted by Paradise. â–
