Colusa tennis opens season 1-1

In their first two matches of the 2022 season, the Colusa RedHawk tennis team went 1-1 last week, falling 5-4 on the road in Gridley, before bouncing back at home with a 5-4 win over Corning.

Against Gridley on August 23, Colusa got straight set singles wins from No. 3 Vianey Farias (6-1, 7-5), No. 4 Ashley Perez (6-1, 6-0), and No. 5 Sofia Benitez (6-1, 6-2), while in doubles Perez and partner Adilene Iniguez downed their opponents 8-3.

Although not included in the final totals, which is limited to the top six seeds, No. 7 Harleen Grewal emerged victorious 6-2, 6-3, as did Alison Torres (6-2, 6-0) in the No. 8 position.

Bouncing back on August 25 against visiting Corning, Perez, moving up to No. 3, won her match 6-3, 7-5, while Benitez (4-6, 6-2, 6-2), Iniguez (6-4, 6-2), and Grewal (6-1, 6-2) each earned wins playing in the fourth, fifth, and sixth spots, respectively.

Torres recorded a 6-3, 6-1 triumph at No. 7, and No. 8 Melanie Pinon notched a straight set 6-1, 6-1 win in her first singles match of the year.

On the double courts, the duo of Benitez and Torres won its match 8-1.

This week, Colusa took another shot at Gridley on Tuesday and today heads to Chico to take on Pleasant Valley, one of the Northern Section’s best programs. ■
