Check It Out! Celebrate Halloween at the Colusa County Free Library!

By Stacey Zwald Costello, Library Director

Happy Halloween from the Colusa County Free Library! As costumes, candy, and pumpkins fill the days, the library is here to help you enjoy the spirit of the season with stories that bring both giggles and goosebumps. Whether you’re winding down after trick-or-treating or looking for a cozy way to celebrate at home, we have a wide range of Halloween and holiday reads ready to be checked out.

Our shelves are filled with family favorites like “Bats at the Library” by Brian Lies, “Creepy Carrots” by Aaron Reynolds, and “How to Pick a Pumpkin” by Patricia Toht, perfect for little ones. Older readers can dive into mysteries and spooky tales like “The Graveyard Book” by Neil Gaiman or “Small Spaces” by Katherine Arden, while adults might enjoy eerie classics such as “Something Wicked This Way Comes” by Ray Bradbury or “The House of Hollow” by Krystal Sutherland.

A seasonal favorite for all ages is “It’s Halloween” by Jack Prelutsky, a playful poetry collection that perfectly captures the excitement and imagination of the holiday. Here’s one of our favorite verses:

There’s a goblin at my window,
A monster by my door,
The pumpkin at my table
Keeps smiling more and more.
There’s a ghost who haunts my bedroom,
A witch whose face is green,
They used to be my family,
Till they dressed for Halloween.

As October comes to a close, it’s the perfect time to start browsing for upcoming holidays. Our branches feature a wide variety of seasonal books that go far beyond Halloween, from Thanksgiving, Hanukkah, Christmas, and New Year’s Eve to Valentine’s Day, St. Patrick’s Day, Easter, Día de los Muertos, and more. The Colusa County Free Library has stories, cookbooks, and plenty of activity books to help you learn about and enjoy nearly every holiday imaginable throughout the year.
