Navy veterans from VFW Colusa Post 2441 gather to celebrate the U.S. Navy’s 251st birthday Oct. 14. The celebration included cake, camaraderie and memories of their years of military service.

COLUSA, CA (MPG) – Navy veterans from Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) Colusa Post 2441 gathered to celebrate the United States Navy’s 251st birthday Oct. 14 with cake, camaraderie and plenty of sea stories.

John Tiernan, left, the oldest Navy veteran in attendance, and Ignacio Prado, the youngest, participate in the traditional cake-cutting ceremony celebrating the U.S. Navy’s 251st birthday at VFW Colusa Post 2441 on Oct. 14.

The celebration honored the Navy’s history, dating back to Oct. 13, 1775, when the Continental Navy was established. Veterans shared memories of their time in uniform, recalling old shipmates, duty stations and experiences that created lifelong bonds.

A highlight of the celebration was the traditional birthday cake-cutting ceremony, performed by the oldest and youngest Navy veterans in attendance.

This time-honored military tradition symbolizes the passing of knowledge, experience and naval heritage from one generation of sailors to the next. The oldest veteran represents the Navy’s history, wisdom and traditions, while the youngest represents its future and the responsibility to carry those traditions forward.

For the veterans of Colusa VFW Post 2441, the gathering was more than a birthday celebration. It was an opportunity to honor their shared service, strengthen the bonds of brotherhood and remember that although their days in uniform may be behind them, the pride of serving in the United States Navy lasts a lifetime.
