RUMSEY, CA (MPG) – Firefighters continued to make progress Tuesday on the Rumsey Fire near the Colusa-Yolo county line, despite the wildfire growing to 450 acres. As of Tuesday afternoon, the fire was 15% contained.
The vegetation fire was reported at about 3:40 p.m. Monday, July 20, off Sand Creek Road near the Colusa-Yolo county border. It quickly spread through grass and brush in steep, difficult-to-access terrain.
Firefighters worked through the night to keep spot fires under control, aided by night-flying helicopters that targeted flare-ups from the air. CAL FIRE reported that while some ember cast occurred, cooler nighttime conditions helped limit new fire starts even as relative humidity dropped into the mid-20% range after midnight.
Crews also completed a dozer line along a ridge east of Sand Creek Road to secure the portion of the fire that crossed the roadway and became established on the fire’s right flank.
Approximately 175 personnel were assigned to the incident Tuesday morning, including 15 fire engines, six hand crews, five water tenders, four dozers and three helicopters. An early morning air attack also included an air tactical aircraft and three air tankers to support suppression efforts.
CAL FIRE said firefighters continue to strengthen containment lines and work to prevent additional spread.
The cause of the Rumsey Fire remains under investigation.
No injuries, structure damage or evacuation orders had been reported as of Tuesday afternoon.
