COLUSA, CA (MPG) – Time is running out for residents to purchase tickets for the Annual Jim Davison Memorial Rubber Duckie Race, set for 2 p.m. July 4 on the Sacramento River.
The popular Fourth of July tradition, hosted by the Colusa Lions Club, offers participants a chance to win cash prizes while supporting local students. Ducks can be adopted for $5 each through Lions Club members or at Davison Drug in Colusa.
Organizers encourage community members to purchase their ducks before race day, when 2,000 numbered rubber ducks will be released into the river and race downstream toward the finish line.
The event features $1,000 in cash prizes. First place wins $500, second place receives $300 and third place earns $200. Winners do not need to be present to claim their prize.
The race also serves as a fundraiser for Egling Middle School students attending science camp.
The race honors the memory of Jim Davison, one of the event’s founders. The fundraiser began in 1988 when Jim and Marilyn Davison introduced the concept through the Colusa Downtown Association.
Over the years, the Rubber Duckie Race has become a staple of Colusa’s Fourth of July celebration. While the event’s organizers have changed through the decades, the tradition has remained largely the same: numbered ducks are released into the Sacramento River, and the owners of the first ducks to cross the finish line win cash prizes.
A portion of the proceeds benefits Egling students and helps offset the cost of attending science camp.
Residents interested in participating can purchase their ducks before July 4 from Lions Club members or at Davison Drug and Stationery in Colusa.
