PRINCETON, CA (MPG) – The annual Holy Ghost and St. Anthony Portuguese Festa will return to Princeton on Sunday, June 28, bringing together families and visitors for a day of tradition, food and community celebration.
The festa celebrates a tradition dating back more than 700 years to Portugal, where Queen Isabella, later known as St. Elizabeth, became known for helping feed the poor during a time of famine. The tradition remains an important part of Portuguese culture and continues to be celebrated throughout California communities with strong Portuguese roots.
This year’s Big Queen is Avery Calonico, daughter of John and Amber Calonico. Her side maids are Gianna Calonico, also the daughter of John and Amber Calonico, and Olivia Vasquez, daughter of Bobby and Mallorie Vasquez.
The Little Queen is Cora Langerwerf, daughter of Leigh and Cassi Langerwerf. Her side maids are Francheska Alves, daughter of Frank and Staci Alves, and Fallyn Mendes, daughter of Brad and Gabby Mendes.
Activities begin with a parade at 9:30 a.m. from the Portuguese Hall to St. Joseph Catholic Church. Mass will follow at 10 a.m., with the traditional father-daughter royalty dance taking place in front of the hall after Mass.
A traditional Portuguese lunch featuring roast beef, sopas and potato salad will be served from noon to 2 p.m. The afternoon auction begins at 1:30 p.m.
Dinner will be served from 6 to 8 p.m., followed by a second auction at 7 p.m.
The celebration is open to the public and continues a tradition that honors Portuguese heritage throughout Colusa County and beyond.
