WILLIAMS, CA (MPG) – Often thought of solely as a test of endurance, Sacramento Valley League cross country teams showed off their speed as well when they took advantage of a fast, flat three mile course east of Williams on Oct. 28, where in both the varsity boys and girls races the top 10 finishers set personal records.

Turning in the fastest time of the afternoon was Williams’ freshman sensation Jeremiah Perez, who set a new school record with a time of 16:57, breaking the previous best of 16:59 set by Alonso Navarro in 2015.
Perez was one of three Yellowjackets in the top four spots with Manny Santillan (17:37-PB) finishing third and ahead of Phillip Santillan (17:47-PB) in fourth.
Yet, it was the Colusa boys edging the ‘Jackets 38-52 in the overall team competition led by Bryan Sarabia (17:09-PB) who finished in second.
Three more RedHawks claimed positions in the top 10 including Zachary Vazquez (18:55-PB) in fifth, Javier Perez (19:17-PB) in seventh and Filberto Perez (19:53-PB) in tenth.
Pierce’s Adan Beltran (19:17-PB) was sixth.
In the varsity girls’ race, Williams’ Lucia Vidrio-Mederos continued to lead the conference as she crossed the line with a new personal best of 21:09.
Meanwhile, Colusa had Alexia Carmona (23:21-PB) and Leina Awai (25:49-PB) finish in second and ninth place respectively.
This week marks the end to the regular season as teams vied at the SVL championships which were hosted by Willows at Stony Gorge Reservoir on Nov. 4.
