Come Park With Me: Tress, Theater, and Pickelball

By Thomas Roach

Colusa Rotary Club has surpassed its original goal of planting 100 trees, reaching 113 new trees throughout the city. The effort began three years ago when Rotary approached the Colusa Tree Commission with a proposal to expand the community’s urban canopy. Rotarian Antonio Ortiz coordinated the project, working with city staff and volunteers to organize planting efforts each spring and fall.

DJ Nokes with the City of Colusa prepared each selected site. Griff’s Feed and Seed sourced and supplied the trees. Rotary members and local volunteers assisted with planting, often alongside homeowners receiving the new additions. Ongoing care remains essential. A deep watering every couple of weeks and light annual fertilization will help ensure healthy growth.

Community support was also evident at local events, where Amy and Michael Doherty of Grindstone Wines in Arbuckle continued their tradition of pouring at fundraisers and gatherings across the county. Their presence and commitment to local causes have become a familiar part of many celebrations.

Theater activity is increasing this spring. Stagehands will present “The Curse of Dionysus,” written and directed by local student Mia Cowsert as her senior project. Performances are scheduled for March 6 and 7 at 6:30 p.m., with a March 8 matinee at 1:30 p.m. Colusa High School Theater Club will stage “Frozen” on May 1 and 2 at the community theater located at Tenth and Webster streets.

Pickleball advocates also reached a milestone. After sustained outreach and coordination, a partnership between the City of Colusa, Colusa Rotary and the county pickleball group will bring four new courts to Sankey Elmwood Park. City grant writer Sadie Boggs Ash assisted with research and funding efforts, helping move the project forward through the Parks Commission process.

Thomas Roach serves on the Stagehands board, the Parks, Recreation and Tree Commission, and is the parent of Mia Cowsert.
