Colusa baseball rolls over Pierce

Colusa’s Peyton Humphrey leads away from second base in front of Pierce’s Tony Maldonado in a game on May 2.

After beginning last week with a non-conference game in Sutter, the Colusa RedHawk baseball team went on to dismantle Sacramento Valley League and county rival Pierce in two run-rule shortened contests.

In Sutter, the RedHawks were out hit 10-5 by the Huskies and found themselves down one going into the final frame, but a single by Niko Silvas plated the tying run to make the score 4-4.

A prearranged agreement prevented the game from going into extra innings, and thus it ended in a draw.

Luke Kalfsbeek finished 2 for 3, while in addition to Silvas, Sutter Moss and Adan Travis each had a hit apiece.

On the mound, Will McCoy, Joel Magallon, and Moss combined to strike out seven.
Returning home on May 2, four RedHawk pitchers, including Bo Coronado, Peyton Humphrey, Landon Humphrey, and Seth Kalisuch, combined to throw a perfect game in an 18-0 win over the visiting Bears.

Peyton Humphrey led the way at the plate going 3 for 4 with three RBI, while Moss, Kalisuch, and Silvas all had two-hits and multiple RBIs.

In Arbuckle where the two teams reconvened on May 4, play was a little ragged, as a combined 10 errors were committed in a contest that ended 14-3 in Colusa’s favor.

Colusa’s Sutter Moss makes a throw to first base for an out in the RedHawks win over Pierce on May 2.

While eight different RedHawks recorded hits, they also were the beneficiaries of 13 free passes.

Pitching by committee, Kalfsbeek, Peyton Humphrey, and Coronado limited Pierce to just three hits and in the process logged a combined 12 strikeouts.

Brayden Hoebel, Danny Rubio, and Luke Myers accounted for the Bears’ only hits.
SVL champion Colusa (22-3-1, 12-1) played a make-up game against Durham at home on Monday and received its seeding in the Northern Section CIF Division IV playoffs on Wednesday, while the Bears (7-14, 4-10) had their season come to an end. ■
