The Williams City Council last week commissioned just over $1 million in work to repair and maintain several city streets.
The council on April 20 awarded a contract to All American Construction in the amount of $662,778.30 for pavement repairs and overlay of 7th Street, and $347,690, among others, Graham Contractors for a significant amount of microsurfacing work on Vann Street.
Williams officials said they are pleased with the bids after staff estimated the cost in January to be about $1.28 million.
“We feel very good about this,” said City Administrator Frank Kennedy. “It’s been a long time coming and it will make a large impact in the life of the pavement, the condition, and the overall look and feel for the citizens.”
Williams City Engineer Trin Campos said pavement microsurfacing is considered specialty work that is not normally performed by general contractors. Therefore, to encourage more competitive bidding, the city advertised two separate contracts.
The five bids for pavement repairs ranged upward to $978,893. Six bids for microsurfacing work ran upward to $594,247.50, officials said.
In addition to awarding the bids, the city has budgeted about $50,000 for contingency, $8,000 for geotechnical site testing, and $25,000 for construction management.
The total cost for the street work is $1,094,000.
“This is a great opportunity for us,” Campos said.
Project funding will come from the city’s general fund, officials said. ■
