DURHAM, CA (MPG) – Warm temperatures did not slow down the RedHawk tennis team as it made a clean sweep of their Trojan adversaries when it opened Sacramento Valley League play on Sept. 8.
Colusa’s entire singles ladder posted victories starting with No.1 Janell Garcia who took care of business in her match 6-2, 6-0.
Following suit was No. 2 Ilyali Cruz (6-1, 6-1), No. 3 Emily Lopez (6-3, 6-3), No. 4 Hirami Ochiai (6-3, 6-2), No. 5 Luna Torres (7-5, 7-6 (7-3)) and No. 6 Viviana Trejo (6-3, 6-4).
In doubles the No. 1 tandem of Garcia and Cruz prevailed 8-0, at No. 2 Charlotte Stever and Baylee Guizar emerged 8-3, while Lopez and Trejo doubled up their opponents 8-4 in the No. 3 spot.
Colusa followed up the next day with a non-conference match at home against perennial power Orland in which they fell 1-8.
While Trejo in No. 6 match picked up the only win coming from a set down to triumph 3-6, 6-0, 10-6, Coach Melissa Michalk praised the effort of her team saying, “Orland is used to beating everyone quickly, but our girls fought so hard that we forced them into tie breakers, which they have not had to play thus far. I’m really proud of them.”
This week, Colusa (4-2, 1-0) hosted Willows on Sept. 15, made the trek to Paradise on Sept. 17 in a pair of SVL contests.
