‘Jackets’ Fall Short in Volleyball Opener

WILLOWS, CA (MPG) – Despite a spirited effort throughout their first preseason match, the young Yellowjacket volleyball team suffered some growing pains and ultimately fell 21-25, 25-17, 26-24, 23-25, 6-15 on the road in Willows last Thursday night.

In the first set, nerves seemed to play a role as the Honkers jumped out to big lead, although to its credit, Williams fought back to make things interesting, but the early deficit was ultimately too much to overcome.

However, in the second set, strong serving helped the ‘Jackets come back with a vengeance to blow past Willows.

That momentum then carried over for Williams as it came from behind to steal the third set thanks in part to the play of sophomore Jacqueline Esqueda who delivered not only in the front row, but also served the final three points recording two aces in the process.

Although statistics were not kept by the Yellowjackets, it was an impressive varsity debut for Esqueda.

Nevertheless, the match slipped away as the Honkers capitalized on hesitancy in the ‘Jackets’ back row in the fourth.

It was more of the same in the final set, with Williams unable to get back on track.

In spite of the loss, there were plenty of positives with middle Evelin Iniguez turning in a strong performance at the net, while Esqueda, Yurydia Rocha and Aimee Velazquez were aggressive on the attack.

Additionally, setter Lupita Rivera looked poised in facilitating the offense, as well as from the service stripe.

Looking to bounce back this week Williams (0-1), hosted Clear Lake on Aug. 18 and Live Oak on Aug. 20 before heading to Chico for the Panther Invitational Tournament on Aug. 22.
